The traditions of old-fashioned melodrama are given a hip facelift in this homage to the Brill Building era (the late 1950s to the early 1970s) of pop-music glory, providing a perfect match between writer-director Allison Anders and her excellent cast. Illeana Douglas plays a singer-songwriter (loosely modeled after Brill recording artist Carole King) whose life runs emotionally parallel to popular music trends. John Turturro is a stand-in for 'wall of sound' producer Phil Spector and Matt Dillon is a thinly disguised version of maverick Beach Boy Brian Wilson. It's a bit too schematic in the way the central character is always in the right place at the right time, but as a tale of fame and romantic highs and lows in the '50s and '60s the movie is funny, touching, and sincere. It's a lively and loving tribute to timeless music and the colorful characters who created it. --Jeff Shannon

The first time we watched this movie was probably over 10 years ago - loved it then and love it now. The music is fabulous as is the story line and acting. It's a great one to own!!!

A very long time ago I was looking at Moooovies for a new film when I see one copy of this movie--I pick it up read- Rent For the rest of my life I will wonder what is wrong with the movie biz that a compelling story like this has been over looked by more than 1/2 the world. Rating: - Grace of My Heart
This is a wonderful movie capturing the days of the Brill Building in New York where the majority of the songs we heard in the 50s, 60s, and some 70s were written. It accurately depicts a time when female songwriters and singers were in the vast minority. Coupled with the fact that the movie is loosely based on Carole King's life before she received acclaim as a singer as well as a song writer, this movie and its music reflect a wonderful era.
