Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: Observational humor had been George Carlin's specialty for over 20 years when Playing with Your Head--the comedian's fifth special for HBO--was recorded in 1986. Carlin's not resting on his laurels here, presenting an abundance of new, politically incorrect material while expanding a few older routines. In 'Sports' he applies hilarious criteria to what does or doesn't qualify (hockey doesn't count; lacrosse is a 'faggot college activity'), and 'A Moment of Silence' pays mock-mournful tribute to an ill-fated (and presumably fictional) group of '43 elderly, mentally retarded Bolivian senior citizen volleyball fans.' If that kind of irreverence puts you off (and if so, why are you reading this?), you'll fare better with the universal humor of 'Losing Things' (we all do it, right?), and a characteristic survey of language in 'Hello and Goodbye.' In any case, Carlin's best enjoyed when seen and heard, and the film noir spoof 'The Envelope' provides a clever introduction to the funnyman's entrance onstage. --Jeff Shannon

Rating: - NOT ONE OF CARLIN'S BEST MOMENTS, BUT STILL WORTH SEEING!
Watching these shows now after his untimely death, I appreciate them even more. Not only are they funny, they are completely engrossing and thought provoking! A gifted comedian, watch a master at work! This is a very good set, but there were better sets to come! I know 71 years isn't exactly young, but I thought he would be around for a much longer time!
R.I.P. George
You will be missed.
Rating: - Brilliant
George Carlin is brilliant in this one! One of the best of his many performances...This is a must have for any Carlin fan or anyone who just enjoys laughing hysterically!
Rating: - One of his best
I am not too picky when it comes to Carlin and I must say this is one of his best not quite as agressive or angry as What am I doing in New Jersey which would come out two years later. But still isightful and funny with jokes about sending people your love to charities it's George at his best.
Rating: - Not Carlin at His Best
I happened to have seen this particular special on HBO--he seemed to be going through the motions. The long, running gag on the tragic death of the retarded bolivian soccer fans ran out of steam on its first iteration. I believe this is the same special where he listed like 107 words you can't say on television, which was not particularly funny at all and was obviously derivative of an earlier time. Carlin is worth listening to even if he's just shooting the breeze--he's a brilliant man and a real ... Read More

I enjoy George Carlin and have purchased many of his DVD's and books. This DVD might have been very funny in 1986 however it does not transfer well into todays world of 2005. It's almost like the difference between jokes an 8 year old tells and the jokes you hear later on in adulthood(This being the 8 year olds jokes). I feel like I was mislead by the 4 and a half star rating. If you are looking for something that is not very funny this is for you! Otherwise don't get ripped off like I did, this is ... Read More
