Editorial Review:

Description:
Magnificent. That's the voice of Judy Garland. Magnifique. That's Gay Purr-ee, a charming animated musical featuring the great Garland in one of her final roles. She's the singing and speaking voice of Mewsette, a French country cat who runs off to Paris during the Gay '90s. Director: Abe Levitow

Amazon.com:
This little gem has the pedigree of a purebred Persian: it features voices of no less than Judy Garland and Robert Goulet, the original songs of Wizard of Oz composers Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, and the writing talents of animation giant Chuck Jones. Garland gives life to our young heroine, Mewsette, a naive country kitty who runs off to seek the bright lights of Gay '90s Paris; Goulet is her devoted country bumpkin beau, Jaune-Tom, who sets off to find her (accompanied by the scrappy kitten Robespierre). While in Paris, Mewsette falls prey to the dastardly yellow-eyed Meowrice, and his compatriot, Madame Rubens-Chatte (played with hilarious swagger by Hermione Gingold), who runs a cathouse of ill repute off the Champs Élysées. The story is slim, itself a bit of an homage to Oz: country girl longs to spread her wings, leaves home, and has many adventures, only to discover that there's no place like home. But the stylized look of the film is breathtaking--the French countryside looks like miles and miles of Vincent Van Gogh's sensual Arles--and Garland and Goulet are in fine voice. If you love surreal animation, Judy Garland, cats, or Paris--or any combination thereof--this film will have you purring. --Anne Hurley

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Gay Puree
An old favorite of mine when I was young-It was just as much fun to see it now as it was then! The characters in this cartoon are great. It was wonderful to hear the voices of Judy Garland [as Mewsette], Robert Goulet [as Jaune Tom] and Red Buttons [as Robespiere]. For those of you who are used to the animation available today it won't be nearly as much fun. But for nostalgia buffs [circa 1962] a definte must see!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Judy Garland fan? Buy it!
I trace my love of all things French to seeing this movie when I was six & listening to "Take My Hand, Paris" with the French pronunciation of Paris (Paree - get it? a movie about French cats, Gay Purr-ee?). Great song with the always completely wonderful Judy's heart-tugging voice filled with longing for a more exotic life than her one on the farm. Some really good music in this. Also a funny turn by Hermione Gingold as the fat Persian proprietor of a feline "charm school." There's a montage ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Problem with DVD
I ordered two of these. One for a gift. One came with a DVD and the other had no DVD inside. Amazon very kindly and quickly sent me another copy. It again had no DVD.
Amazon decided to refund my money(which was fine) as they felt there was a problem with this product rather than try for the third time.

I gave the DVD to my grandkids and am hanging on to my VHS version! It is a great movie--great story---hilarious in parts for both young and old. Highly recommend but be sure ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Thank you for such a great powerful memory!
I loved this movie as a child! I loved it so much my first toy poodle was named Meuzette.

When I saw this movie again, I had to have a box of tissues. When Garland sang "Little Drops of Rain" I so lost it! I remembered every word even though I hadn't sung it since a child! And the way it effected me the rest of my life became apparent!

Yes, it is hokey animation, but remember, it was made in 1962. Not the top year for special effects or animation.

I did feel ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - My 7-year-old loves it.... and so do I!
Wow! This is so beautiful!!! I expected it to be nice from the reviews, but never would I have imagined it to be such a jewel! I do not understand how I did not come across this movie before!

My 7-year-old is fluent in French, so I use the French soundtrack, which is just fabulous: Philippe Noiret is more than excellent at the narration! (and all the songs are still in English, by Judy Garland... beautiful!).

Great introduction to Paris, for anyone (young or not) who is planning ... Read More
