Editorial Review:
Description: In Topper, Cary Grant and Constance Bennett star as George and Marion Kerby, a fun-loving couple who find themselves in limbo as ghosts after an unfortunate auto accident. Deciding that heaven is just one good deed away, they turn their attention toward their dull friend Cosmo Topper. But Topper is one stodgy banker, and it'll take all the high jinks the Kerby's can muster to haunt Topper into loosening up and living it up. In Topper Returns, Cosmo Topper finds himself once again spooked by a ghost. This time, it's the young and beautiful Gail Richards, the accidental victim of a phantom killer whose intended target is wealthy heiress Ann Carrington. Set on finding her killer, Gail enlists the help of Topper with hilarious results in this zany and entertaining murder mystery.
Amazon.com: A classic screwball comedy with a supernatural twist, Topper stars the incomparable Cary Grant and sparkling Constance Bennett as George and Marion Kirby, a fun-loving couple who cap an evening of jazz and champagne by running their car into a tree. They return as ghosts with a mandate to liven up the straight-laced hen-pecked life of bank president Cosmo Topper (Roland Young), who's hungry for just such a shake-up. Before long he's boozing, dancing, and getting into fights, all of which gives him a rakish reputation--much to the consternation of his wife (Billie Burke, best known as Glinda the Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz). The sequel replaces Grant and Bennett with Joan Blondell, who can't quite compare, but she's charming in her own way. Topper Returns is a rambunctious murder mystery with some gorgeous sets and elegant cinematography--the sequence of Blondell's death and ghostly rise is dazzling. --Bret Fetzer

Rating: - Great movies but not at this price.....
I agree with most reviewers.....I loved both of them but what the hell is going on here with these people selling these at these ridiculous prices...both these movies are in Public Domain...I agree Hallmark & Artisan have done a great job on these movies...but $55, don't think so.....I just downed the Public Domain copies and made my own DVD.....FREE
Rating: - great golden dvd
I ordered topper/topper returns, it was just as described. I received it fast and it was very resonably priced.
Rating: - A poor transfer of a great film (and its so-so sequel)
The divergence of opinion on the quality of this disc is remarkable. Well, here's my two cents' worth: this is a poor quality transfer, hardly distinguishable from a VHS rental tape. I agree with those who say that this DVD must have been mastered from a tape of poor quality, and the heavy compression required to fit two movies on a single-layer DVD has hurt the image quality even more.
Lack of detail, poor contrast, and jitter in the outer portions of the image are among the many visible ... Read More
Rating: - Image problems
I've read the reviews here praising the transfer of topper, and I'm not sure why my experience differs so greatly - I watch my films on a computer, which may have impacted it - but the closed captioning turned on and off erattically and in an uncontrollable manner, slowing up the data stream from the DVD and making it choppy. The image itself was clearly fuzzy with age and missing or brutalized frames weren't massaged digitally at all, as far as I could tell. Ten dollars isn't too much to pay for my favorite ... Read More
Rating: - Topper/Topper Returns
The DVD is a combination of two of the Topper seires of films. The original film, "TOPPER" is an excellent film, starring Cary Grant & Constance Bennett as the Kerbys, whose wild ways lead to their untimely demise and subsequent appearance as ectoplasmic madcaps to Cosmo Topper, played perfectly by Roland Young. The script follows Thorne Smith's book in it's hilarious journey to free the timid Mr.Topper from his wife's domineering control. Billie Burke eschews the role perfectly. The special effects were a ... Read More
