Editorial Review:

Product Description:
A tormented prince of Denmark has mixed feelings about avenging his father's murder.

Amazon.com essential video:
Franco Zeffirelli's stripped-down, two-hour version of Shakespeare's play stars Mel Gibson as a rather robust version of the ambivalent Danish prince. Gibson is much better in the part than many critics have admitted, his powers of clarity doing much to make this particular Hamlet more accessible than several other filmed versions. The supporting cast is outstanding, including Glenn Close as Gertrude, Alan Bates as Claudius, Ian Holm as Polonius, and Helena Bonham Carter as Ophelia. Zeffirelli's vigorous direction employs a lively camera style that nicely alters the viewer's preconceptions about the way Hamlet should look. --Tom Keogh

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Gibson's preoccupation with violence began here...
When you think of Mel Gibson's career, it is a traverse across infinities of violence. Even his comic, antic cop movies are motivated by violence. Nobody can deny that the heart-sickening violence of the Passion of Christ was the the scene of the flogging of Christ by drunken centurions. Where better to start one's voyage than in Hamlet?

Since this is a young Gibson, you can see where he began his trademarked looks. He looks off camera one way while his eyes shift to the other to ... Read More

Yet another gift I bought for a friend of mine. I've watched it and was surprised at how good it was. I'm a big Shakespeare fan so I get picky at remakes of his plays, but this one passed my test with flying colors!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Special features useful for classroom
This dvd includes two mini documentary's, both featuring Mel Gibson. In the first, he talks about the challenges of playing Hamlet, and of acting in a Shakespearean tragedy over all. The second, longer documentary goes into debt about the making of Hamlet. The first documentary especially is very useful for college/ highschool level Shakespeare studies. I'd recommend it to other teachers as a valuable and inexpensive resource if your local library is found wonton of materials for teaching classic ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Wow, that really was Mel Gibson
As renditions of Shakespheare go, this is one of the best. The sets and acting are superb and the pacing works well. This version features a strong supporting cast and they get enough attention to really shine. Further, the appearance of the ghost is a bit chilling, both for the dramatic impact and the delivery of his timeless lines.

My criticism is that you have to be somewhat familiar with the play to understand some of the minor elements. I recently rewatched this with friends who ... Read More
