Rating:  - THE BEST JAVERT EVER
There's a huge mistake here.This is not the 1957 version but the 1981 one with LINO VENTURA as VALJAN and MICHEL BOUQUET giving the performance of his career as JAVERT.BOUQUET literally makes you hate his character that always remain stoic whatever the situation.Try to get the FRENCH version or simply forget it if you don't understand the language.Only the DEPARDIEU-MALKOVICH version comes close to it,even if MALKOVICH is miscast.Avoid the 1957 version with GABIN and BLIER.

This film was disappointing, particularly in the awful dubbing. The voices bear no resemblance to the stars' actual voices and I was shocked to find that it was not in French with subtitles. No, it did not say that it was, but I guess I assumed it would be, not being a really well-known foreign film. The Javert doesn't hold a candle to Charles Laughton's evil portrayal; this guy just looks like a dithery older man who somehow got into a bad situation. The Cosette also seems like an airhead. ...
