Derek Jacobi (I, Claudius, Gladiator) stars as Cadfael, who at one point is aptly described as 'an odd kind of monk.' The former 'soldier, sailor, sinner, and Crusader' has his faith tested by crimes of royal intrigue and baffling murders that seem to plague the neutral ground of 12th-century Shrewsbury. 'The Virgin in the Ice' is a good introduction for Cadfael initiates. This story of 'violence and cruelty' involves the near-fatal beating of a young monk, the murder of a nun, and the disappearance of two children. Local undersheriff Hugh Beringar (played over the course of the series by Sean Pertwee, Eoin McCarthy, and Anthony Green) relies on Cadfael when murder subverts his efforts to keep the peace. A tense standoff between these two friends heightens the climax of 'St. Peter's Fair.' Americans have never seen a sleuth such as Cadfael, a fascinating character who is at once a man of God, of science, and even of action. I remember watching this in the 90's. A really great series that does a reasonable job displaying 12th century England. As another reviewer posted, if you remember watching these when they are aired on PBS's Mystery, you will miss the 30 second introduction.
The video quality is not high. It was more enjoyable to watch on an older TV.

This is truly one of the best series I have EVER seen. The photography is wonderful,ell acted,and there is the true sense that these were REAL happenings. I even got my brother to watch it with me and he was truly enthralled too.

First delivery was damaged, replacement was sent out right away and arrived without and protective packaging but the product was intact. Excelent color but the volume varies during scenes and from disc to disc. Overall satisfaction is good.
Rating:  - A beautiful period work
Cadfael is a delight on so many levels - the history, the mystery, the life story of this singular monk. So much of the detail is accurate to time and place. i bet most don't know that the story of cadfael's life is also a very typical theme for period litereature - warrior returns from foreign wars to retire into the monastic or hermetic lifestyle. Ellis Peters did an outstanding job. too bad she passed before writing another dozen or so...

This series should have been a great success except for the dreary settings, weak supporting cast, and slow plotting. Derek Jacobi is a phenomenal actor and extremely watchable but he can't carry this series alone. I have not read any of the Cadfael books.
In I Claudius he was a stunning success. Unfortunately, as this Medieval detective he just doesn't shine as brightly. Playing the former warrior, now a monk, Jacobi has much more sense of the world outside his village than do almost ... Read More
