Editorial Review:

Product Description:
With the help of his right-hand man TV John police constable Hamish Macbeth (Robert Carlyle) keeps the peace in Lochdubh's mean streets in his own idiosyncratic way with little regard for police regulations and every intention of avoiding promotion. Promotion would mean leaving his police home the wild beautiful Scottish countryside and Wee Jock his beloved West Highland terrier. So the less his superior officers in Inverness know of his policing activities the better.Running Time: 246 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES & SEQUELS UPC: 794051230522

Amazon.com:
Before his breakout performances in Trainspotting and The Full Monty, the intense Robert Carlyle starred in the quirky mystery series Hamish Macbeth. As the constable of a small village in the Scottish highlands known as Lochdubh, Macbeth struggles to maintain the social balance of his tight-knit town, solving crimes along the way. In fact, the show as a whole leans more towards character drama than whodunnit; when a newcomer to Lochdubh (Phyllida Law, The Winter Guest) receives threatening notes, finding their source is little more than the hook for a web of characters' portraits and social observation. This may disappoint hard-core mystery fans (and fans of the books the series is based on), but the quality of the writing and the performances gives the show an emotional richness few mysteries can muster. Two episodes in particular--one in which Macbeth seeks revenge for his dead dog and one where he tries to keep a corporate team-building exercise from turning deadly--are unexpectedly wrenching. Other episodes are more comic; in one, lobsters are the key to a local bully's disappearance, and another hinges on tubs of raspberry ripple ice cream. But even when the show turns whimsical, Carlyle's live-wire presence keeps you glued to the screen, ably supported by a solid cast--especially impish Shirley Henderson (Yes, Topsy-Turvy), whose quiet yearning for Macbeth strikes a plaintive note and leads to a nerve-wracking series-ending cliffhanger. (Two caveats: The Scottish accents are occasionally impenetrable--though the stories are always clear enough--and the fourth episode of this six-episode first series could not be included on this dvd set.) --Bret Fetzer

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - First series
We liked Robert Carylyle in the Full Monty and enjoy British/Scottish "country life" shows so we had high expectations. We watched the first episode and liked it but wasn't sure it was great. However as you watch more episodes you come to know and like the characters. And the plot lines were quirky enough to keep you guessing.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Disappointing for MC Beaton fans
If you are an MC Beaton fan, don't bother with this DVD. Only (some of) the names, and really none of the characters, are the same as the books. Why the BBC chose to change everything is beyond me. Stick with the books. They continue to be a delight to read.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Fun, quirky,
I enjoyed this wonderful, funny, and quirky characterization of the residents of this northern seaside Scottish village. I really look forward to seeing the rest of the series.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Television just doesn't get any better!
Hamish Macbeth has everything that's lacking in American television, it's brilliant entertainment. The writing, the music, the character development are all outstanding. It's filmed in Plockton, within sight of Duncraig Castle...right in the heart of Clan Matheson territory. If you missed its airing on BBC America then be sure to get the DVD, you won't be disappointed.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Stands on Its Own
I first saw the TV series, then started reading the books. Initially I watched the series because I also have a Westie, like Wee Jock. Soon, I was sucked into the stories and characters. When I discovered the books I was excited but confused by the dissimiliarity to the series. However, they are each excellent. It is hard to imagine anyone else playing Hamish or Alexandra/Priscilla. As a previous reviewer wrote, some of the mysteries of the TV series do seem to be mere hooks to hang character studies ... Read More
