Humor columnist Dave Barry hosts this cinematic investigation, based on his popular book, into the whats, whys, and wherefores of being a guy. Not a man; a guy, a distinct subspecies that Barry is careful to distinguish. Interviews with women reveal that guys rate only slightly higher than tapeworms; conversations with assorted experts (all played by Monty Python's John Cleese, A Fish Called Wanda) explore the petty, compulsive side of guy-ness; and dramatic re-enactments capture the many ways in which guys and the women in their lives speak almost entirely different languages. Dave Barry's Complete Guide to Guys occasionally bogs down in standard sitcom-style gags, but more often Barry's warm, middle-of-the-road humor hits its target (or, just as often, finds a sneaky way of moving the target to where the joke landed). Barry's genial, deadpan sincerity keeps the movie buoyant as it mocks sports, dating, competition, laundry, mid-life crises, and bathroom etiquette. Any fan of Barry's will find much to laugh at here, and newcomers will be drawn into the writer's comic world. I think Dave Barry's writing is akin to stand-up comedy. His flow, pacing, "delivery", and choice of material fits with the concept of a comedian on stage, giving a show with nothing but a microphone. His books are almost all based on the idea of picking a topic, then making lists of sub-topics, and cracking jokes about them. So to translate this into movie form required that the material be augmented and sometimes significantly changed. The writer of the movie had two choices I think. He could have ... Read More

A tiny bit on the cheesy side, but very fun, and often hilarious.
Note that this 2005 version (Amazon's release date for this is wrong, I think) of the DVD with the pink cover that includes a picture of Dave Barry has several special features that were cut out of the newer 2006 version that has the blue cover not including Dave Barry's face. That blue-cover version, along with having more professional-looking DVD menus, may have better picture quality during the film, though -- at least ... Read More
