Editorial Review:
Description: The First Kings of Comedy Collection is a hilarious, joyous, and timeless tribute to the era of silent slapstick comedy and all the uproarious comedians who built the comedy genre. The collection consists of two great feature-length compilations, The Golden Age of Comedy and When Comedy Was King. From documentary producer Robert Youngson and the Hal Roach studios, The First Kings of Comedy preserves some of the greatest moments in comedy lore and pays special tribute to all of the silent era’s greatest clowns, including Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Will Rogers, Carole Lombard, Jean Harlow, Charley Chase, Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle, Charlie Chaplin, Harry Langdon and Buster Keaton.

Rating: - very nostalgic but chaplin is missing.
this dvd is worth the price for the 2 movies included in this set. it reminded me of this first 2 movies of silent comedies when i was in grade school. however when i saw it again this dvd after 40 years, i was disappointed that there is not much charlie chaplin this 2 movies than i had realized. laurel and hardy were hilarious in this set. however, this dvd is still great for collection purposes.
Rating: - Good Collection, Awful Package
The collection is a nice introduction to silent comedy, but the producers seem terrified of letting the movies be SILENT. There's good stuff in here, but the constant narration and heavy-handed sound effects are truly annoying. You're better off with restorations of the real thing.
Rating: - Nostalgia and great service
These are hard to find Laurel and Hardy shorts. With one click, the videos were on their way. The service at Amazon is great and the videos are in sterling quality and exactly what I ordered.
Rating: - A Museum Piece
This is more than just a movie. This deserves to be shown in museums. Especially the second half, When Comedy Was King. While there isn't enough (and never will be)shown by some of these true comedy geniuses, and there isn't anything shown of Harold Lloyd, these clips show enough examples of the long lost art of silent comedy to fascinate anyone of any age. This was when cleverness was king, and while I found the narration fun and informative, it wasn't essential. While fans of the genre may be familiar ... Read More
Rating: - The first kings of comedy collection (80588)
I was so glad to have the opportunity to be abble to see "live on the screen" two french canadians: "Max Sennet" whose real name was: Maximilien Sinotte, and "Will Rodgers" whose real name was: Pierre-Joseph Dufault... The "montage" is very effective and the voice-over, even if a little to present, gives a lot of good instructive annecdotes!!! I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did!
