Editorial Review:

Product Description:
The Rodriguez clan comes home to Chicago to celebrate Christmas and the return of Jesse from Iraq.

Amazon.com:
If Nothing Like the Holidays appears to have little in common with Frank Capra's small-town perennial It's a Wonderful Life, Alfredo De Villa's urban dramedy also mixes the bitter with the sweet. The fireworks begin when Eduardo and Anna Rodriguez (Alfred Molina and Elizabeth Peña) welcome their Puerto Rican brood to celebrate Christmas in Chicago: Iraq War veteran Jesse (Illinois native Freddy Rodríguez), struggling actress Roxanna (Death Proof’s Vanessa Ferlitto), and attorney Mauricio (John Leguizamo) and his tightly-wound spouse, Sarah (Debra Messing). While Roxanna finds herself drawn to family friend Ozzy (Jay Hernandez), a former gang-banger, Jesse struggles with his feelings for ex-girlfriend Marissa (Melonie Diaz), who's moved on in his absence, and Anna laments her lack of grandchildren, but when she announces she's divorcing Edy, a bodega proprietor, the entire clan decides to make the most of their last holiday together. If De Villa's intentions are honorable, and his cast is up to the task--especially Molina and Rodríguez--the two halves of his film make for an awkward fit. Jesse's shell-shocked veteran, for instance, belongs to a different movie than that of his wisecracking cousin, Johnny (Luis Guzmán). Then, when Ozzy picks up a gun in an act of revenge, domestic drama and ethnic comedy collide with the hood flick. Unlike the many brash and materialistic entertainments crowding the multiplex at the end of the year, Nothing Like the Holidays prioritizes cultural and emotional matters, but still registers as more of a missed opportunity than a contemporary classic. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Just added another favorite to my holiday collection
I love this movie. I found it funny without it being crass; emotional without it being a tear jerker. A great Christmas movie to add to your collection. It certainly has a whole lot of flavor and thank God it's not another gringo Christmas flick.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Mexican Christmas
This was a really good movie. Actually a pretty comical depiction of Christmas in a Mexican family. The bonus soundtrack was just that.....a great companion piece to the movie.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Great cast; mediocre script...
I really wanted to love this move... and while I think it has a great cast of Latinos/as, it just seemed like a drama one would find on tv. The script just wasn't all that great... and except for the music and the one scene where the neighborhood residents parade through the streets singing a latin-tinged holiday carol, it struck me that this movie wasn't all that latin in flavor. It just seemed to be a script which could have easily been cast with all African-Ameicans (perhaps because it was produced ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Did we really need another home-for-the-holidays ensemble movie?
Well, perhaps not, but at least this is a first rate example of the genre. It benefits from a fantastic cast, an ethnic slant, and a novel location. These story elements will probably feel more like family than the usual Hollywood kind. The DVD includes some nice extras, so this is highly recommended. But after this, lets give this genre a rest for a while--finish on a high.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Great cast; so-so movie
"Nothing LIke the HOlidays" is an ensemble comedy that follows a trio of Puerto Rican siblings on their way home to Chicago for a Christmas season family reunion. It is more of a drama with comic highlights rather than the laugh out loud comedy it is touted to be in the description. It has a stellar cast, but the story itself is a little predictable and at times sappy. Definitely more of a movie to watch when it comes on television rather than seeking it out for purchase and watching repeatedly.
