Product Description:
Filmed over the course of more than six years at some of nature's most spectacular locales - from Acadia to Yosemite Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska - The National Parks: America's Best Idea is nonetheless a story of people: people from every conceivable background - rich and poor; famous and unknown; soldiers and scientists; natives and newcomers; idealists artists and entrepreneurs; people who were willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved and in doing so reminded their fellow citizens of the full meaning of democracy. It is a story full of struggle and conflict high ideals and crass opportunism stirring adventure and enduring inspiration - set against the most breathtaking backdrops imaginable. ?The National Parks America?s Best Idea? is stunning and restorative like the parks themselves.? Timothy Egan NEW YORK TIMES July 12 2009 ??The National Parks? film ? thoughtful reflective powerful ? is vintage Burns another of his pulse takes on America?s institutions and characters a la his long looks at jazz the Civil War baseball Mark Twain and other subjects.? ? Brett Johnson VENTURA COUNTY STAR March 20 2009 ?With their next documentary ? 'The National Parks: America's Best Idea' ? the filmmakers take on their greenest project yet delving into the often-contentious history of our 58 national parks while probing the notion that our best landscapes should be preserved for everyone.? ?Scott Learn THE OREGONIAN March 6 2009 Burns is erudite and entertaining and in an era when old-fashioned storytelling is threatened with becoming blasé encouraging as well. Few other filmmakers make history seem so compelling make the viewers feel as much a part of the story as what is being shown onscreen.? ? Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - An extremely left-sided view of history
I truly believe there are special moments in this documentary and all you need to do is read the positive reviews for that. But there is a reason for some of these heated negative reviews and I'm completely disappointed that Ken Burns took what could have been an uplifting story of the creation of some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world into National Parks and exploited the topic to get his political opinion across. I blame Dayton Duncan for a lot of that as his interviews can get nauseating, ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Uplift!
No home in the USA should be without this compelling series! The human stories are as inspiring as the Parks themselves.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A must see
If you enjoy the grand beauty of nature this DVD set is a must. Ken Burns has once again shown us a glimpse of our nation that is unique, full of wonder and beautiful. Every time I watch this series I get something new out of it.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - National Parks certainly aren't America's "best idea."
Contrary to the views of the makers of this documentary, I do not believe that national parks are "America's best idea." Instead, I believe that liberty, the US Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and capitalism, are America's "best idea." Nevertheless, I did enjoy watching most of this documentary, even though I disagreed with a lot of it. The makers of this documentary have a very statist orientation. They believe that humans are destroyers of the planet and that it is the government to protect ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Ken Burns: National Parks - America's Best Idea
This series is very informative and detailed. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous. Watching this makes me appreciate all the beauty we have in our own backyard. Yes, there are beautiful places throughout the world, but the United States has many outstanding places as well. Thank God there were people who recognized this and wanted to preserve it for future generations to appreciate and enjoy. This is a very balanced account of the struggle to recognize the gems we have in this country and the fight to preserve ... Read More
