Rating: - Wonderfully unusual and satisfying
Lovely little movie that brought tears to my eyes at its' unexpected ending. This is one for a rainy night under the afghan, snuggling with the boyfriend. Val Kilmer is charmingly believable as blind Virgil in what he's said was his most challenging role to date. He shines in this, using his velvet voice and body language to full advantage; the rest of the cast is also steller. Who wouldn't fall for Mira Sorvino as Amy?
Personally, I'd never seen Kilmer smile before as much as he does in the film, and he sure made me smile. Virgil is independent, aware, self-effacing, witty in his own, sightless comfort zone; take him out of it and he behaves pretty much as someone suddenly blind would.
The film is an interesting statement on perspective and the human condition. Highly enjoyable.
Rating: - A Philosophical Theme
Among other themes that are presented effectively, the movie portrays very credibly the complex relation between our images of things, how we think about them, and our sense of our identity. It would take me weeks to get my students to appreciate the crisis caused by a confrontation with images of things for which we have no concepts, a crisis which this movie sets in awesomely clear focus in a matter of minutes. A smart movie.
Rating: - Dissappointing
I bought this DVD on a whim, sight unseen from the $5.99 bin on Val Kilmer's reputation as an intelligent and entertaining actor. After viewing it with my wife we both agree with the general feeling of the reviews listed here. It SHOULD be a better movie. It SHOULD be a captivating story. It HAS a terrific cast. So, why is it so boring to watch?
I respect Val Kilmer's acting and his integrity as an actor. Most critics seem to agree that he is an "intelligent" actor. Why is he so miscast in so many things? Would someone please write a script specifically with the talents of Val Kilmer in mind... please?
This story tries to be many things from a story of independance to a love story, but fails pretty miserably at all that it attempts.
Like many of us, I was introduced to his acting in the low budget, now cult icon film "Real Genus" (naturally, I have reviewed this film also) where as the young, smart mouthed, fast talking College senior he literally stole the show from Gabe Jarrett who got top billing and was virtually never heard from again. I'm sorry to say that overall it has been his best (high profile) vehicle to date, though I personally thought it unfair that he was universally panned as Batman.
Good Luck with your own dreams.
Rating: - Decent enough romance, but drags on
Love at first sight is a feel good romance that makes you wonder what sparks true love .But on the whole, I thought it dragged on just a little too long, cutting it down to about an hour and half would have been just as emotional and dramatic as the two and half hour version.
Not bad if your looking for a decent chick flick with some intelligence. Otherwise.....
Rating: - A memorable portrait !
Based on a real story , this film is real artistic triumph . I do not agree with many people and even critics who state this picture is a soap opera . It contains many dramatic issues that invite you to think .
How can we adapt to the real world inmersed in a dark world where the blindness imposses us its own roles ?
This medical repport works out as a perpetuum mobile through the film , it is supported by a good script and a special chemistry generated for Mira Sorvino (I love her) and Val Kilmer in a very credible role as the blind man .
The brief process in which he recovers the sight sense is a life lesson .
Irwin Winkler caught the insights , and the inner conflicts of any man in a situation like this .
Excellent photography and edition .
