Rating: - Bad transfer
Don't buy this version of the movie. It looks like it was directly transferred from VHS. The box says it is "widescreen". It is NOT true widescreen. The transfer looks very bad. The quality of this is horrible for both the audio and video aspects. I would recommend purchasing the Criterion version or the other DVD release.
Movie-wise it was okay. There is definately some on-screen chemistry with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant, but the story is a little kooky. Not the best movie vehicle for both stars involved. A rental at best, if interested.
Rating: - A lesser known gem
Although I admit to being a huge Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn fan and so am a little biased, this has to be my favourite of their films. Grant, ever stylish and charming puts on a virtuoso performance in one of his later films (we was in his 60s here), as the handsome stranger helping Audrey after she finds her husband murdered. But is he one of the good guys or is he a spy?
Some entertaining supporting performances from Walter Matthau and James Coburn too.... great fun for a light night in, from a time where even the villains had a lighter side.
Rating: - charade
I think this is a wonderful movie.I love the mixture of humor, romance, and mystery. It arrived promptly and in good condition.
Rating: - Audrey Hepburn is spectacular
I saw this movie for the first time this weekend, and instantly fell in love with it. I have always loved Audrey Hepburn, and this time is no disappointment. She looks amazing! Also, Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn have wonderful chemistry. I am not one for mystery-type movies, but this is definitely an exception. I want to buy it, but I think I will take the advice and buy it elsewhere. Great movie, though!
Rating: - Wonderful film--and Wonderful Commentary from Criterion
As almost all of the reviews here indicate, this is a wonderful movie--with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn in top form (along with the supporting cast, many of whom made this before becoming top stars themselves).
The Criterion edition is wonderful and at first, I was disappointed in the lack of extra features (especially for a Criterion edition). However, the commentary more than makes up for it. Stanley Donan and Peter Stone give so much interesting back story to this production as to really show what making such a film is like. Their banter is amusing but you just get to hear how true professions at the top of their game go about making such a wonderful entertainment as this.
Enjoy!!
