Rating: - Not a particularly comfortable film
I enjoyed the many twists of speech in this movie, though I found the movie itself vulgar. I reminded myself a few times that this was part of the point that the movie sought to communicate about the Earl, so was pacified.
The value of this film is indeed in the acting performances of Depp and Samantha Morton. I enjoyed the Pirates movies, but wasn't particularly dazzled by the acting. Those films are fun, but not memorable in the best sense of the word, for me at least. This helped me to get a stronger impression of Johnny Depp's great talent.
This movie has moments I'd like to forget, but the Speeches! The superb Acting and speaking of the Words!
If you take the movie in pieces, and listen to it, it elevates, though the visuals ultimately are dark and gritty in a way I've chosen to call "uncomfortable."
If you can't take those moments without it casting a shadow on the whole film, don't see this movie.
Rating: - Eerily Entertaining
I rented this movie on a lark - ONLY because of Johnny. I had, in fact, not even heard of it until I saw it sitting on the shelf at our local video store.
I must admit that I was not sure what I was getting myself into - but as soon as the opening scene rolls, Johnny takes that sip of what could only be the cabernet sauvignon that he adores, and starts into his character - I was mesmerized.
Not only is he beautiful as ever to look at - even with the horrid pasty makeup that they had to use to get the Victorian feel to this movie - but his accent was perfect and his mannerisms flawless.
It is not a fairy tale and in some places is very hard to watch - but for all of the nastiness of some of the situations - I don't remember breathing through the whole movie. If you get the chance to see this movie - I very much suggest that you do - you will be watching and Oscar-worthy performance from one of the most under-rated actors of our time. It is Johnny in all his glory and splendor - uncomparable!!!
Rating: - Great Acting, Dark Movie
Johnny Depp gives another sterling performance, this time as John Wilmot, the Earl of Rochester, and there are strong performances by John Malkovich and Samantha Morton, but overall, the movie is dark and disturbing. But I suspect that's what it was supposed to be. Critics may love this movie because of the performances, but I doubt many viewers who just want to be entertained will like it. While the performances are first rate, the movie is curtained in despair, much like the lead character.
I didn't enjoy this movie, but I didn't turn it off, either. Johnny Depp was just too intriguing, and the interplay among Malkovich, Depp and Morton, too complex and fascinating. There's good dialogue in this movie, realistic settings and great costuming. But it's not a fun movie to watch. If you're looking for an uplifting, fun evening, skip this one. If you want to watch experienced and talented actors performing at their best with an intellectual script, this movie is a good choice.
Rating: - Gag me with a spoon!!!
I found this film to be a total waste of otherwise good talent. It should be rated X. I didn't know "Johnny" could stoop so low. It made me want to barf!!!
Rating: - Horrid Movie
I saw all the revies for this movie and was expecting a dark enjoyable tale about a libtertine. I was strongly mistaken. Johnny Depp is a great actor with great abilites, but this is the worst movie of his I have ever seen. Even his "cheesy" movies were better than this. The rated R rating is light. I couldn't believe how pornographic it was. Even in Quills, it wasn't as raunchy as this. Don't waste your money or your time with this one.
