Rating: - Everybody should watch this movie!!!
I have no idea why the above reviewers would be against a current anti-war movie / horror film. If this is the only way to get people's attention and tell the truth behind the war, then so be it. Thank the writer for having the guts to take a chance that the republicans and spin doctors in the white house would even allow the american public to see it. It even had the presidents mocked voice in the background to make sure it hit home and the banned pictures of flags over the coffin that was silenced awhile ago.
I do recommend this movie!
Rating: - What a shame
Shame on you, Joe Dante.
You had the opportunity to participate in a project with the best of the best in horror, and *this* is what you pinch out? A political diatribe with no true horror elements whatsoever?
I won't go into it here, as others have described the propaganda elements of this film much better than I could. Suffice it to say that Dante offended me on so many levels - the *wrong* levels for a horror film - that I will never, ever watch another of his movies in my life. He shall not profit from me ever again.
Dante takes clumsy, slanderous shots at the President, his staff, our servicemen, and the populace (basically he paints the picture that only a small number of us care about the fates of our soldiers). If you have even an ounce of respect for any of these people or institutions - or yourself - this movie will make you see red.
Dante even takes a shot at George Romero by producing a zombie movie so utterly devoid of subtlety in its social commentary. There's a scene where undead veterans are rising from their graves, and one of tombstones reads "G. Romero." If George was down there, he'd be rolling.
Horror as entertainment is supposed to be an escape from the true horrors of our world. You curl up in a dark room or theater, eat some popcorn, and when it's over you can hopefully look at the horrific events in our world with a different perspective. Either Dante doesn't understand this, or he decided to say the hell with it and steal the opportunity to make the film he was obviously foaming at the mouth to produce. In either case, Joe Dante is no Master of Horror.
I bought this as a part of the two-volume anthology. This DVD is leaving my house one way or another. I'd love to be able to send it to Dante's office with no explanation. I think he'd get the point. Anyone have the address?
Rating: - GARBAGE!
This is the most insulting piece of garbage I've seen in a very long time. Utterly ridiculous and a smack in the face to every serviceman and woman that has defended our country throughout it's history. I HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS DVD!!!!
Rating: - Homecoming was not made to prove anything
And so, it doesn't. It's just somewhat lightly amusing sidedish for people who think war must be for self-defense purposes only. The facts are out and only idiots still believe the Iraq war was about stopping them from using Weapons of Mass Destruction to destroy America, or to find Osama Bin Laden and finally make him pay for 9/11, or even to give aid and comfort to an already terrorism-torn nation. Those are facts. Try to run away from them. But you can't hide the truth.
Anyone who sees Homecoming will understand that this was not made because it was the only film or media that would come along and say the Iraq war was pointless. We have had many documentaries and lots of left wing political pundits and politically-informed celebrities to do that for us. Homecoming was instead made so that Horror could weigh-in on the issue, in the way it as a genre so cleverly always comments on serious social issues of its' day.
Homecoming is about the freedom that Liars have and the elation with which they serve themselves in the name of serving a greater cause. And about how big, serious lies bring forth great suffering, and one day (God-willing), big, serious consequences. The truth was (and is still being) buried with the brave men and women who fought a war without being honestly told what they were fighting for. But you can't hide the truth forever. And so, in horror's often untimely way of returning the cards back to the dealers who dealt them, the Liars are in danger of being exposed. And have to work desperately on keeping their seed-lies covered as best they can. So that the main source of the deception and the reasons for deceit are not revealed.
Yes, that's right. It's all very complex...
Well, Homecoming is "about" something. That gives it some redeeming values. But not enough to make it a great piece of filmmaking. Or even a standout in the Masters of Horror series. Which is in contrast to what a lot of these, bless their kind hearts, positive reviewers seem to be saying. The filmmaker would want the viewer to look beyond the message. So, I have. And here's what I came up with:
Homecoming lacks power. One thing that hurts it is that it uses a comedic approach to satirize certain right-wing figures. Which is fine and dandy. But, who honestly thinks they are all that funny to begin with? They do not have much of a sense of humor. Nor is it at all amusing that so many people actually believe the garbage they spew out. Nor does an unapologetically goofy satire do any real justice to the material when one remembers how many human lives are actually at stake here. Is this the right time to be laughing? And for that matter, wasn't Fahreinheit 9/11 funny enough? So, shouldn't Horror take a more stark approach to this subject?
Homecoming needs tragedy. It needs a sense of real loss. And it doesn't have that. It doesn't feel like it's trying to make a point with the cinematic tools at its' fingertips. Dialogue and bloated characters do show us how ridiculous the real people are. But not how dangerous they are. Not how damaging they are. And in that way, isn't it also demeaning the viewer? In the way that it gives us nothing more than what we could stand to watch as we're flipping through the less entertaining groups of channels? The villains of Homecoming are too silly. They lack the power to be scary because they're treated as a "circus act." Which can only be called frightening when it's called what it really is: dismissive.
And for that reason, is Homecoming trying to play it safe by not just coming out and saying what it means? Is "playing it safe" what Horror should be doing when dealing with something this serious? I don't think it's more disturbing to try and find the humor in something that is in reality so nasty and devious. I think it's a method of finding comfort. But these are not the times when we should be comforting ourselves. We should continue to enrage and provoke the at-ease and numb. Which Horror can do because it strikes when you're not expecting it. And Dante is a Master of this. Or at least, he used to be. Until he found himself trying to say a lot without using Horror as anything other than a safety net. Calling it Horror just means we don't question how the dead soldiers are able to rise up from beyond the grave.
Now to be even more blunt- there is too much 'character' establishing talking in Homecoming while not enough addressing the main point. And the zombies of Homecoming are mostly being used as sidekicks in the story to carry out the filmmakers' mission. Without actually telling us why and how that can work. Then, only foreign concepts are used to generate fear. For instance, when the 2008 Election is rigged again, it's not treated as a revelation or a shock. It's almost ignored. Because the filmmakers think the more important thing is to tie-up character loose ends. Not in Horror. And not in a movie where all we've seen is all character and no Horror.
Homecoming is too experimental. And I don't think we're ready for it. Besides, for all the hype, rave reviews, and compliments... how many of the people raving for it really love it all that much? Do they feel it's their duty to speak on its' behalf? Because of their own opinions?
I bought Homecoming because I thought it was time to be intimidated by zombies who were not just the living dead, they were the Ultimate Symbols of What We're Afraid of: Ourselves. They are the victims of our ignorance and apathy. They return to show us what will happen to the rest of us if we continue to let the Powers That Elect Themselves make our decisions for us, if we keep trusting they have Our interests at heart and not just Theirs. These zombies didn't look Us straight in the eye and say, "what are you looking at? Who says you have the right to look?" We should have fought harder for them. And they shouldn't have accepted any excuses. If Homecoming isn't going to make us fear the Power Figures, how about making us fear the people we let down?
What was the point of Homecoming? It wasn't to raise awareness or prove a point. So the least it could have done was scare us. But it decided that making us fear the soldiers would be disrespectful. Which I can understand. But what I can't understand is why the political Game-Players are not treated as scary in this movie. Maybe it was to prove the Right-Wing Bloggers are hypocrites. Maybe it has something to do with our own jadedness and thick-headed selfishness.
