Rating: - Fun, engaging and quality
This version of Northanger Abbey is great. I think the actors are all brilliantly cast, the music is great, and the filming is on spot. The script preserves the novel, and the fantasy sequences are funny. Catherine is portrayed by the delicious Felicity Jones, and she demonstrates the whole gamut of the character's traits/feelings -- naive, well-meaning, concerned, remorseful, shocked. JJ Feild is superb brings out the best in his character's wit and seriousness. I really was smiling the entire time, and enjoyed this through and through. There is nothing wrong at all!
Thank you Masterpiece!
*****/***** for Northanger Abbey
Rating: - Disappointing
It was a decent attempt, but it left out too much of the book to make it worthwhile. A Jane Austin production should never be done in 90 minute episodes; too much is lost.
Rating: - Love this remake!
I enjoyed watching this remake. I liked the actors alot and felt the differences in this version verses the other is well worth watching.
I felt the characters had more depth and I got to know them a little better than the other version.
I tried to find information on the actors and got very little information. I liked the actors playing Henry & Eleanor Tilney as well as Catherine Morland.
Rating: - wonderful adaptation
While I also liked the previous BBC adaptation of Northanger, this one is equally good. The script, the casting, the acting, the music all combine to a lovely movie worthy of Austen. Particularly fetching is the actress playing Catherine Morland. She looks like a young Kate Beckinsdale (shades of her great adaptation of Emma -- much superior to the insipid one with Paltrow) and I hope to see her again and again. The actress playing Mrs Allen is no other than the one who played Fanny Price in the previous BBC adaptation of Mansfield Park - which I also thought was very good. I also liked the girl who played Isabella, though I think she was a little too likeable and less of a flirt than she was in the novel and in the previous BBC adaptation.
Rating: - Very Good, Made me re-read the novel - just to remember nuances
Way too short as in condensed a bit, but captured the essentials of Jane Austen's "Northanger Abbey". I just finished re-reading "Northanger Abbey" due to viewing this version. Fine performances by actors portraying Henry Tilney (J.J. Field), Catherine Morland (Felicity Jones), Isabelle Thorpe and all the rest.
