Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Superb acting and a moving story
I bought this movie because I'm a great fan of Stephen Fry and especially Hugh Laurie. I did read the negative reviews but I'm very glad I didn't let them put me off. The movie is touching, funny, and thoroughly absorbing. It's a portrayal of friendship at its best. I can't think of anything I'd change. Hugh Laurie was outstanding, as usual, in a role quite different from his portrayal of Bertie Wooster. I started to praise a few of the other actors but they are all so wonderful that I'd be here all night! I can't believe that you will be sorry if you buy this movie.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - A vision of hell...
Branagh creates a creepy world of horror in this little film. Imagine being surrounded by one-dimensional "characters" who trot out their crisis motivations at precise intervals. Then wallpaper it all with your favorite tunes of the 80s and pretend this serves as "continuity." Then come up with a final revelation that is stunning in its predictablity. They claim it all only takes place on a weekend, when it really feels like eternity. "The Big Chill" was only a toe dipped in the pool of smug self-importance--now take the dive.

The worst part is that everyone involved here has done very good work elsewhere. Somehow, I think Ed Wood got channelled into the bargain.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - a master piece
This film was a briliant piece of work. Branagh and Thompson were acting at their best. Laurie and Fry were at their usual greatness.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best movie I've seen in years.
I was totally appalled to read some of the negative reviews of this marvellous movie. I hate to say this, but it helps to be British to understand and appreciate the clever, quick humour, and to be able to relate to this group of college chums -- all of whom, I might add, were perfectly cast in their roles. You could go to any stately home in Britain today and find an identical assortment of friends behaving in exactly the same way. As we are fond of saying in England, it was "spot on" -- wonderfully funny, poignant, yet excrutiatingly sad at the end. Oh, and the background music was terrific!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - one of my Top Ten Worst Movies
You'd be better off watching all six hours of a blank VHS cassette than five minutes of this cliched folderol. Clearly derivative of "Big Chill" sickly sentimentality and perfectly devoid of quality writing, "Peter's Friends" ranks with "Ishtar" in its utter waste of talent. I adore Brannagh and Thompson and Mr. Frye is a brilliant man, but asking them to be part of this mess is like watching Ken Griffey Jr. play Wiffle Ball. The actors out of league with their lines.
